I work from my studio and small gallery in the Devon coastal town of Salcombe and many of my maritime scenes are drawn directly from experience and knowledge of this uniquely beautiful place and the constantly shifting nature of the coastal environment.
I was delighted that my painting ‘Salcombe Morning’ was commissioned by the Salcombe RNLI, as a donation, to raise funds through a silent auction. The winning bid was announced at a lunch held at the Harbour Beach Club in South Sands and was won through a magnificent offer of £11,000 from The Baltic Exchange.
The painting was originally to be imagined as a representation of one of the Salcombe RNLI’s many heroic rescues, demonstrating the phenomenal commitment, sacrifice and energy of the crews on those callouts. We decided however to explore a less well documented, but equally important, ingredient of that commitment by capturing a scene which might hold clues to the day-to-day vigilance, attentiveness and readiness of all who are involved with the phenomenal success of the RNLI operation, even on the finest, still days. I hope to have captured just a little of this.
What a pleasure it has been to play a small part in this incredible moment in the RNLIs history.
